Final Show – ???

Are you ready for some POETRY?

It’s the return of Kapisanan’s Poetry Unit — PSL (Poetry Is Our
Second Language). This year, we’re doing it in 4 parts +1 — which
means we’ll meet for four weeks (starting Aug 6), read some poetry,
work on some poetry together and then as a group we’ll choose a date
for a poetry jam at Kapisanan to end it all off and see what we came
up with.

What is PSL?

Over the 4 weeks, we’ll be talking about traditional Filipino poetry,
like Tanagas and Balagtasans, poets like Jose Garcia Villa, Carlos
Bulosan and maybe some Rizal. We’ll see what poems incited
revolutions and change. We’ll talk to Patria Rivera about publishing
our work. We’ll speak to Dwayne Morgan about getting up on stage and
sharing our work with others.

Most of all, we’ll find out that Poetry has been a part of who we are
since the beginning of time until today — so there’s nothing to be
afraid of!

The Kickoff

Class is in session starting August 6th at 6pm and we’re going to
start it off with a play day. That means an Open Mic and a special
guest Poet Performer, so you can leave your notebook at home for this
first one.

We’ll start off by opening the floor to poets you may or may not have
heard of yet. So far, I hear that Myk Miranda is coming, plus me…
and the return of Dean Vargas, the rest is TBA. This is an OPEN MIC,
so if you’ve got a poem to read or always wanted to it — this is your

I’ll also give you a preview of the next few workshops for PSL and a
bit about our special guests, which include Patria Rivera and Dwayne

Our First Guest

Our very first guest on August 6th is Dr. Kevin Nadal — an old friend
of mine who has graced the stage of the Nuyorican Poet Cafe in NYC.
Kevin will be performing some poetry and spoken word on our humble
stage and we’re very glad to have him.

Kevin Nadal has also performed on stages and at college campuses all
over the U.S. He’s been a pioneer in the Filipino Student Movement
(yes, he is also a kuya) is a professor, psychologist, performer,
activist, and author, having published several works focusing on
Filipino American, ethnic minority, and LGBTQ issues in the fields of
psychology and education. Find out more about him at <
www.kevinnadal.com >

He’ll be launching his book, “The Psychology of Filipino-Americans”
right here at Kapisanan and we’ll have an opportunity to meet him and hear about his experiences. You can buy the book online and there will be copies of the book on sale too! I hope you can all be there to help me welcome him and show Dr. Nadal what Toronto’s got.

On August 6, just bring your open ears, open mind and your poetry. We’ll bring the vibe and the coffee.

I hope to see you then.
