Cultural identity – what have you got to say about it? (Post 2)
“I swear that I will be faithful
and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada
Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully
observe the laws of Canada
and fulfill my duties as a Canadian citizen.”
“If white people are pleased we are glad. If they are not, it doesn’t matter. We know we are beautiful. And ugly too.”
The first quote, the Oath of Canadian Citizenship; the second, (by none other than an American) written by the poet Langston Hughes. Juxtaposed against each other, the statements hint at the ongoing conundrum of negotiating one’s cultural identity.
So let us write, let us think, let us talk. The Kapisanan Youth Roundtable.
