Break The Cycle

by Leonard

A few months ago (before the existence of this blog), Kapisanan played host to Schools Without Borders’ BLITZ FILM CAMP, where kids from at-risk communities across Toronto had the opportunity to explore film and video, assisted by industry professionals.

I was fortunate enough to be one of the camp facilitators and found it to be one of the most rewarding weekends in recent memory. Over the weekend, we explored storytelling, pre-production, camera and post-production techniques toward the final product: a 30 second PSA commercial. The subject? A touchy one: RACISM.

I had a great group; Daniel, who was into film and was part-Ehiopian descent, and Kristen and Gerard, two Filipino kids from Pope John Paul High in Scarbarrio. These guys shared the duties of Producer, Writer and Cinematographer on this project.

Here’s the group’s entry:

It’s not quite finished yet, but hopefully we can get together and put some polish on this. What do you think? Pretty good for first-time film kids outta high school!

Do you think its important to mentor the youth? What other programs do you think would be useful and fun? What would be the factors that would convince you to volunteer? (And you ARE a youth, what would make you attend?)
