KAPISANAN Artist Call Out

This call out is for individual artists or collectives to submit NEW work to be part of the LAUNCH of KAPISANAN’s brand new website (bookmark www.kapisanancentre.com!!) and the RE-LAUNCH of our store-front gallery slated for Saturday April 3, 2009.

We are open to all mediums including but not limited to paintings, photography, sculpture, mixed media, print work, film/video, performance (theatre, poetry, music), interactive multi-media, animation.

Proposal Submission Deadline: Friday January 8, 2010
Selected Artists will by notified no later than January 15, 2010

Proposals must include work that will be part of the KAPISANAN store-front gallery in Kensington Market AND/OR part of KAPISNANAN’s website virtual gallery.

Theme: Pasalubong, Pabaon and Padala: The Story of the Filipino Diaspora
Pasalubong (or welcoming gift) Things you bring for loved ones so that they may welcome you back.
Pabaon Things you pack for people to take with them.
Padala Things you send “home” or to people who are far away.
We are a culture of “packers” — balikbayan boxes, baggage (colonial baggage, religious baggage, immigrant baggage), packed lunches, or packed up left-over party food – To share, to send, to bring with us.

Once approved, on-line work must be ready to upload by March 10, 2010. Work to be exhibited in store-front gallery must be dropped off and ready to install by March 26, 2010.

KAPISANAN is the curator of the exhibit and will select work that best delivers on the theme of the project. KAPISANAN reserves the right to refuse any artwork which does not represent or participate in the culture of KAPISANAN and any artwork that may be deemed offensive or inappropriate.

Fees:
Selected Artists will be paid an exhibition fee. Fees will be determined by how many Artists are selected.

KAPISANAN Commission:
If the Artist permits sale of the art work, any sale will be handled by KAPISANAN and a 30% commission will be retained by KAPISANAN on all sales during the exhibition period.

Show dates:
April 3, 2010 – onward for a minimum 3-month installation or longer, TBD.

Requirements:
• must be between the ages of 18-30
• must be a high school graduate
• must be a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant

15-20 hours per week
$10 per hour OR MORE based on experience

Position start date August 1 2009 – 4-month contract

The Program Coordinator’s responsibilities include:

Primary Responsibilities:
a.    Coordinate and evaluate all aspects of Drop-In Program, and corresponding exhibits/disseminations
b.    Implement Conversational Tagalog Workshop Series and Critical Filipino History Workshop Series
c.    Organize and manage all logistics of Drop-In, Tagalog, and History programs
d.    Coordinate/Facilitate related workshops with Drop-In participants
e.    Lead KAPISANAN outreach activities and events (ie. AGM, Kultura, fundraisers etc.) alongside KAPISANAN Administrator.

a)    Program Logistics
a.    Marketing, program coordination, documentation of feedback, evaluation, and
Follow-up with participants and facilitators.
b.    Manage resources eg. equipment, dvd library, art supplies, space bookings for
programs, etc.
c.    Coordination of arts-based activities or workshops
d.    Nurture KPC participants and members to encourage them to stay on to help
implement the program and reinvest their own knowledge and newfound     expertise.

b)   Internal Support
a.    Update the blog website on a regular basis with Program content
b.    Maintain and submit to the KAPISANAN Executive Director on a monthly basis an updated report of spending respecting various program activities.
c.    Prepare and submit reports as may be requested from time to time by the ED.

c)    Outreach (these duties will be shared with KAPISANAN Administrator)
a.    Represent KAPISANAN in community organization-related meetings and special events, such as job fairs and other youth opportunities
b.    Lead outreach and logistics for KAPISANAN Programming, and KAPISANAN’s other activities as needed, time permitting
c.    Track, monitor and evaluate outreach strategy; involves keeping statistics, recording activities and outcomes, as well as producing regular reports

d)   General Duties
a.    Participate in monthly Staff Meetings, trainings and professional development, and other special events and fundraising events throughout the contract period.
b.    Provide support/mentorship and supervision to youth volunteers
c.    Perform other administrative tasks relative to the position as required
d.    Conduct membership drives and volunteer recruitment

We are seeking a dynamic and committed young person with:

o    Keen interest or some background in the arts and culture production.
o    In-depth understanding of challenges facing youth in the Filipino-Canadian community
o    In-depth understanding of Filipino & Filipino-Canadian culture, experience, and struggles
o    Combination of education in a related field and/or equivalent life experience
o    A passion for empowering youth from an anti-oppression and anti-racist framework
o    Good working knowledge of Tagalog and/or other Filipino dialects an asset
o       Ability to manage program budgets and materials, and develop program resources
o    Good organizational and time-management skills; able to work under pressure and meet deadlines
o      Highly proficient with internet technologies, i.e. blogs, social networks
o    Be prepared to travel within Toronto and the surrounding areas as required and work flexible hours
o      Working knowledge of Adobe CS (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) an asset, though we are willing to train

The Administrative Coordinator’s responsibilities include:

Primary Responsibilities:
a.    Maintain strong office systems, ensuring the responsible management of KPC;
b.    Execute day-to-day financial functions and work closely with book keeper;
c.    Manage KPC resources (rentals, drop-in hours etc) and provide logistical support to KPC programs and events.

a) Administrative
•    Manage and implement KPC database, membership and network through traditional (mail outs etc.) and web-based means (Facebook, KPC blog etc.)
•    Manage questions to KPC (email, phone etc), directing inquiries and interest to the appropriate sources;
•    Manage KPC filing system both electronic and paper, keeping it updated with all pertinent information;
•    Maintain copies of ALL necessary documents for grant applications (i.e. Financial statements, By-laws, Letters of Patent, etc);
•    Maintain office equipment such as printer, router, scanner, supplies etc; ensure all staff and membership is able to use equipment regularly.
•    Answering KPC Phone;
•    Maintain copies of KPC promotional materials; i.e. newsletter, info flyer, etc
•    Chair staff meetings, record action items and follow up with KPC staff
•    Develop, draft, and update documents for ‘Kapisanan bible’
b) Financial
•    Liaise with bookkeeper and Board Treasurer to ensure timely financial updates.
•    Pay monthly bills and handle incoming bills.
•    Track budgets and reporting documents for every grant awarded to KPC
•    Maintain effective invoicing system
•    Write cheques to be signed by ED
c) Office/Building Management
•    Manage the member Drop-in Program implementation and logistics along with Program Coordinator
•    Maintain and manage equipment and space rental bookings
•    Act as a logistician for all programs when needed and available

We are seeking a dynamic and committed young person with:

o    In-depth understanding of Filipino & Filipino-Canadian culture, experience, and struggles
o    Combination of education in a related field and/or equivalent life experience

o    Good organizational and time-management skills; able to work under pressure and meet deadlines

o      Some knowledge of Quickbooks (accounting software) an asset, though we are willing to train
